Amazon.com Review
To rid a room of unhealthy or irritating airborne particles such as dust, smoke, and mold, an air purifier can be indispensable. Manufacturer of a wide assortment of air treatment products, Honeywell combines HEPA and IFD (intense field dielectric) filtration methods in this germicidal electronic tower for effective cleansing. Energy-Star certified, the 60-watt purifier removes up to 99.97 percent of a room's air impurities for better breathing.

The air purifier best suits rooms 200 square feet in size. The user selects from the three operation speeds for purification or takes advantage of the 12-hour programmable timer. Air circulates silently through the machine up to four times an hour without any disruption to the room's natural air flow. The purifier traps impurities via filtration and ionization, releasing clean air into the room. While the IFD filter never need be replaced, the purifier illuminates an indicator light when cleaning is necessary. Users clean the filter by rinsing half a dozen times a year or they might choose to vacuum the IFD filter to clear debris. As with all electric appliances, read all information prior to using the purifier. The air purifier measures 19.37 by 15.39 by 14.21 inches and weighs 12.9 pounds. --Jessica Reuling

3 out of 5 stars First Impressions (big, simple and smelly)   July 29, 2010
R. Macleish (NY)
Bought this unit for 2 reasons.

1. it was priced below $80 and that was in my budget
2. it was a "tower" style and i was looking for something that would not take up too much floor space.

Here is what i think after it arrived:

It was bigger than i thought... I was expecting something about the size of a cd tower and this was wider and deeper than i thought. Its not huge, but it's not tiny.

There were many comments about noise. The unit runs a fan on the inside, so there is the constant whoooshh of a fan... low is easily ignored...

Hope it cleans the air...

4 out of 5 stars Nice looking ionizer that performs well, but is NOT A HEPA!   June 4, 2010

First off, 1 star knocked off because of false advertising. As of this review, the product features section states "Purifier quietly employs HEPA and IFD filtration to trap particles and ionize the air." However, on the bottom of the HFD-130's box, footnote 5 explicitly states "Note that this model does not contain HEPA-type filters. The filtration system uses an ionization process to capture particles." This is blatantly illegal false advertising on J&R's part.

OK, that being said, the purifier itself works well so far (I've only had it for a few days). Allergies here in Austin are pretty bad outside, but with the HFD-130 they are definitely better inside. The low setting is quiet enough for me to sleep with, but I also enjoy the background noise of a fan while sleeping.

I measured the HFD-130's power consumption using a basic P3 Kill A Watt meter. Here are both real power (W) and the associated kWh for a 30-day month of 24/7 usage:

Off (but plugged in): <1W Real Power (negligible)
Low Setting: 26W, 19kWh
Med Setting: 32W, 23kWh
HI Setting: 57W, 41kWh

These results are fairly consistent with P. Garman's results from his 2006 review. If you care, the apparent power is (6VA, 29VA, 34VA, 64VA) for the respective settings (Off, Low, Med, Hi).

And finally, the ozone debate. The HFD-130's manual clearly states that it produces less than 50 ppb of ozone. All I know is, I have a history of mild asthma and in the last couple of days I have had NO breathing problems with this purifier on 24/7. If anything changes, I'll update this review.

4 out of 5 stars works good ,but noisey   March 27, 2010
John E. Parker (southern n. hampshire)
The HONEYWELL HFD-130 ,works well. IT CLEANS THE AIR as advertised and the filter is easy to clean, the gauge on top is a usefull tool . The down side is , the fan noise, other than low is to loud at night to sleep through . even across the room.To some people its proably ok , I just dont like that type of sound when sleeping. Other than that a good product, at a good price.
